Wind Speed Wind speeds affect the weather patterns throughout the world and play an important part in the daily makeup of weather regardless if you are at sea level or on top of a mountain. Wind velocity is measured on the Beauford Scale, which was devised by the great Irish Hydrographer (map maker) Commodore Francis Beaufort in 1805 and subsequently adopted by the International Meteorological Committee 1874 as the official means of recording wind velocity. The chart below is shows the 12 velocities know as "force" on the Beaufort Scale.
