Money Matters
The Purser’s office is the financial center aboard ship and is usually located close to the reception desk. Most North American homeport ships operate using the US Dollars, while European homeport ships use the Euro and British homeport cruise ships will use pound sterling. If a cruise ship operates internationally, they will usually opt to use the US Dollar. At ports of call, a cruise line will usually have a local bank or bureau de change come onboard to convert US Dollars into local currency. The local bank or bureau de change will usually only be onboard for a few hours in the morning. For shipboard purchases, a charge account will be setup at embarkation, therefore all you need to do is to sign for such items, such as bar service, gift, shore excursions and beauty salon and spa services. For more information see cashless cruising. For settlement of accounts, passengers may use a credit card, such as American Express, Visa, Master Card (note, that cruise lines do not accept all types of credit cards please check with the cruise line directly), cash or Travellers checks. A limited number of cruise lines will accept personal checks for shipboard expenses, subject to prior arrangements and credit clearance prior to the start of the cruise. |
