Money Matters

Aboard a cruise ship the Purser’s Office is the financial center. The vast majority of cruise ships operate in US dollars, while other ships operate in the their national currency, such as Euros, Sterling or Yen.

On board most cruise ships now operate on a cashless bases and you will sign for all onboard purchases such as bar services, gift shop purchases, spa treatments and shore excursions which are posted to your onboard account and is settled at the end of your cruise via cash, credit card, or travellers checks. The cruise line will produce a detailed statement of your account that will be delivered to your cabin or suite on the last day or night of your cruise. Many cruise lines will request that you pre-register your credit card at embarkation or during the cruise. If you agree with the amount on the statement at the end of the cruise, the cruise line will automatically charge the amount to you credit card.

If you disagree with the amount on your final statement, you should dispute the amount with the Purser’s office as soon as possible to come to an amicable resolution. Do not wait until you have left the ship, it will be to late to rectify any errors.

At some ports of call you may like to have some of the local currency of spending ashore.

Most cruise ships do carry some foreign currency which maybe purchased from the Purser’s Office or the cruise line may invite a local bank aboard and they will operate an independent bureau de change at designated time.

Two to four week prior to your cruise you should arrange for any travellers checks and foreign currency that you require. It also advisable to phone and notify your Credit Card company that you are travelling out of your normal area of use and that you will be travelling aboard.

During the last week before you depart, pickup your traveller cheques and foreign currency from your bank. If you have purchased traveller’s checks keep a separate record of the serial numbers in a separate location.

A good piece of advise is to obtain a supply of small US dollars bills and/or foreign currency for tipping baggage handlers (at the airport, hotel, pier, etc.).
