Cruise Shippers - We Take The "Lug" Out Of Luggage

Luggage

The choice of luggage is an important one as, airlines, airport baggage handlers and stevedores at ports are notorious for rough handling of luggage regardless of make or model. Your luggage must be able to withstand the rigors of conveyor belts and sorting machines, not to mention being stacked, dropped and thrown through the air, which happens all the time.

You don’t want to start your cruise looking for lost or torn items, along with trying to file a claim with who ever is responsible as you sail away. In most cases you will not see your luggage between the time you check in with the airline to the time it arrives in your cabin. If you do have to handle your luggage at any point, do a through inspection and report any damage as soon as possible or before you leave the airport. Do not wait until you arrive at the pier.

The top consideration is sturdy luggage that is well built and this does not have to be top of the range. Do not try to make a statement with using top of the range luggage because at the end of day it is a target for damage and theft. Nobody real sees your luggage other than your cabin steward/stewardess and they don’t notice it because they see thousands of pieces of luggage of all types.

The luggage that you use on your cruise is usually suitable for many other purposes. Good sound advice, if you already have luggage do not go out and buy new luggage especially for your cruise. Use what you have as long as it is well built and sturdy and will withstand the rigours of use. If you are buying luggage buy a well-built and sturdy luggage for multiple uses. It is important to ensure that any piece of luggage is within the airlines limits and is not oversized or overweight.

Padlocks are out and plastic wire ties are in. In today’s world of tighten security at airports it is best to use plastic wire ties to secure your luggage, security personnel wouldn’t take a second thought before taking the bolt cutters to you nice shiny padlock, if they want to inspect your luggage, they wouldn’t wait around to find you and the key to open it up. Padlocks can get caught on conveyor belts and other objects, which can leads to a torn luggage. You can purchase plastic wire ties in allsorts of different strengths, sizes and colours from your local hardware store’s electrical department.

The cruise line will send you luggage labels with your cruise documentation and embarkation details. These luggage labels are colour coded which will designate the deck or the location of your cabin or suite onboard the ship and will help expedite your luggage from the pier to your cabin or suite. Remember to complete you luggage labels clearly and attach them securely to your luggage. Remove all old labels, as this can lead to confusion, mishandling, delays or even loss.

Toward the end of your cruise the purser’s office will issue disembarkation luggage labels that will be colour coded. These are designed to facilitate handling and unloading along with grouping of luggage on the pier prior to clearing customs at the end of your cruise. Remember to remove all old labels from your luggage.

Most cruise lines request that you store your luggage under you bed, this will provide you easy access to your luggage and can be used for additional storage during your cruise. If your luggage is to big or you do not need it during the cruise, you can ask your cabin steward/stewardess if they would take your luggage away and place it in the luggage storage area and they will return it to you on the last day of your cruise. If you place your luggage in the luggage storage area remember to unpack everything you need. It may be extremely difficult to retrieve your luggage during the voyage.

Do not pack valuables, jewellery, or medications in your luggage that will be check with the airline or ground operator, just in case it is unfortunately lost, stolen or delayed enroute to the ship. It is always advisable to carry essentials such as medication, spectacles and toiletries with you at all times in your hand luggage.
