Cancellations and Refunds People cancel or curtail a cruise as a result of certain events taking place such as death, illness, injury, family reasons or redundancy. Cruise lines usually except cancellations and refund the monies you have paid to them, subject to the individual cruise lines cancellation policy penalties. Cancellation policies and penalties vary from cruise line to cruise line and can be found published in the terms and conditions within their brochure. All cancellations must be made in writing and be accompanied by cruise documents to the cruise line as soon as possible, to avoid any further or unnecessary penalties that may apply. Most cruise line will deem the cancellation to be effective on the date of receipt of written notice, along with the accompanied cruise documents. Some cruise lines will accept cancellation notice via telephone or facsimile and such requests will have to be followed up by posting the written notice and enclosing all cruise documents. Most cruise lines will impose cancellations penalties regardless of resale. You can voluntary terminate your cruise while it is progress, but you will not get a refund for any unused portion of the cruise. Some cruise lines are now offering a cruise guarantee, but you must notify them that you are not completely satisfied, before you arrive at the first port of call. If you have purchased additional land programmes, pre or post cruise hotel package and pre-booked shore excursions, many cruise lines will impose a 100% cancellation penalty if you cancel any of these additional packages within 30 days of departure. Cancellation Insurance It is important that you take out full cancellation insurance and or cancellation protection at time of deposit to cover your full cruise fare. If you do not take out cancellation insurance and or cancellation protection out at the time of deposit insurers will not cover you for any cancellation that may take place. Without cancellation insurance or cancellation protection, should you have to cancel your cruise for what ever reason prior to the sailing date you will forfeit any amount paid to the cruise line and you could lose the whole fare that you have paid for the cruise. If you are planning to take an expensive or extended cruise holiday ensure that the cancellation insurance and or cancellation protection will cover your full fare paid, as insurers have upper limits on their policies. In these types of cruises many normal travel insurance policies will not cover your cruise fare in case of cancellation. Consult with your insurer to ensure that you are fully covered for any cancellation. If you can not find the appropriate cancellation policy, consult with you cruise line as they may most likely will have a specialist that they can recommend you to.
